Southwest opening; Buckwheat Mine
The Buckwheat Open Cut or Pit is an open working situated at the southern "keel" of the northward-plunging syncline hosting the southern Franklin orebody.
It was undertaken following the Great Consolidation of 1897 of smaller mines into one Franklin Mine.
During 1897-1902, the pit excavated all the barren rock between and including the southernmost west and east limbs of the folded orebody northward as far as the east-west-oriented lamprophyre (see Vonderheide (2021), called camptonite in older literature) dike.
The pit obliterated earlier limited workings, both open and underground, such as the Weights & Measures pit on the west limb, the Southwest Opening and the Black Hole at the southern nose, and the southern half of the Buckwheat/Taylor Mine on the east limb.
Other smaller features such as the Greer Opening, the Tunnel Opening, the #2 Opening, the #3 Opening, the #1 Shaft, the #2 Shaft, the #3 Shaft, the Wilson Shaft and the Old Shaft were also obliterated by the pit or subsequent working. See Figure 3-8 and 3-17 in Dunn (1995) for detailed maps.
The Buckwheat Pit incorporates Zn and Fe ore veins, Franklin Marble, late Ordovician lamprophyre dike rock, plus a vein-like body of vuggy dolomite (Buckwheat Dolomite Marble) of apparent Paleozoic age. All of these geological features contributed to the diverse mineralogy of this locality.
