Chromitite pods in a phlogopitic peridotite metasomatized by carbonatitic mantle plume fluids.
Many localizations (along the 11 km estension of the Complex) are known for the pods. The complex includes:
- Alpe Polunia, municipality of Cursolo Orasso
- Rio Creves, municipality of Malesco
- Provola Creek, municipality of Malesco
- Rio del Ferro, municipality of Re
PGM (Platimum Group Minerals) were found as micrometric plagues within cromitite pods and are visible under a microsope in Polished sections
Pyrrothite, pentlandite and minor Chalcopirite are widesperead but dispersed in millimetric droplets within the so called "Amphibole Peridotite" all along the complex-
Provided Reference coordinates were referred to Rio Creves Quarry. In the creek not far from the quarry a single boulder with idiomorphic crystals of chromite was found: crystals could be preserved because they were hosted within pyroxenes at the uncommon intersection between a restitic layer of massive chromite and a metasomatic vein of clino-pyroxene. Another similar boulder was found at Provola Creek.
Well-formed pink crystals of zircon can be found within pegmatitic dykes intruded in the Complex. The best so far (within the Italian sector) came from a dyke intersected by the white road going to the Creves quarry.
Sapphirine is instead found as centimetric xenomorph masses within the so called "Inner Layered Gabbro", within an anorthositic layer close to Finero Village. But also within pyroxenite layers on a small hill close by.
