Dodge County is underlain primarily by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks - primarily sandstone and dolostone. Ordovician rocks dominate, although part of the Niagara escarpment, marking the contact with harder Silurian dolostones, dominates the northeastern edge of the County. There are a few outcrops of Precambrian quartzite cut by pegmatites in the southern portion, which are quarried,and have yielded interesting minerals. A discontinuous zone at the top of the Ordovician Maquoketa Shale is called the Neda Ironstone, an oolitic hematite-rich zone with a wealth of rare (though very fine-grained) minerals identified by XRD. These deposits were mined in the Iron Ridge District, but the mines are now abandoned and serve as a major bat hibernarium.
