The largest community in the interior of southwestern Nova Scotia. The area was the site of numerous small prospects in the late 1800s and early 1900s. North of the community, a larger operation was constructed to mine manganese. Very little remains to be found today.

Regarding columbite, Walker and Parsons (1923) provide a chemical analysis from a sample from 'Lavers Mine' that is in the middle of the columbite-(Fe)-columbite-(Mn) series.
