The town of Rotorua is situated on the southern shores of Lake Rotorua. Surrounding geothermal areas are the main attraction, ranging from free areas to visit along the shoreline, and nearby public park, to private ventures involving entrance fees. The town's economy is based on tourism, with a shopping precinct largely designed for tourists, and many hotels. There are a number of non geological man-made type of attractions in the area, particularly focussed on backpackers, families, and/or thrill seekers, ranging from Maori cultural tours, wildlife parks, jet boat rides etc. While scenically beautiful, please be aware of a pervasive sulphur stench throughout the town, and it may not be the best place for people who suffer breathing difficulties.
