Cortabbio is a geographical fraction of the town of Primaluna.
One big mining complex, active till very recent times, is present within its territory, as well as some other small mines and prospects.
Mineralogical occurrences known so far are uniquely linked to the mining activities.
Baryte is the main industrial mineral, excavated from around 1850 till 2012, associated with some polymetallic sulphides. Please note that Fluorite is instead completely lacking.
Occurrences are related to Hydrothermal Veins, sub vertical and roughly oriented around NW-SE, sub-parallel to the axis of the valley, along its SW flank. Hydrothermal activity is interpreted to be related to the late stages of Carboniferous to Permian (late Hercinian - earliest Tethidean) magmatic events, most likely in association with the intrusion of the Val Biandino granodioritic complex.
Quite recently (August 2015) some underground excavations re-opened for touristic visits
