Mined from 1480 (?) to 1908. Second only to Falu mine in national importance. The main ore was silver-rich (up to 4 %) galena.
Now a tourist mine. Extensive dumps remain.

The ores at Sala are located in a dolomitic limestone, which is intruded and underlain by granitic rocks. The mineralization is accompanied by the formation of abundant skarn minerals: diopside, tremolite, minor garnet and (clino)humite, and other minerals such as chlorite, phlogopite and talc.

Salite (sahlite), now a synonyme of diopside, was described from this mine by d'Andrada in 1800.
