A county incorporated on June 25, 1789 and named for John Hancock, the first governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It has a total area of 2,345 square miles (6,070 km2), of which 1,587 square miles (4,110 km2) is land and 758 square miles (1,960 km2) (32%) is water.
