Niger is divided into 7 Regions and one Urban Commune (the capital Niamey).

Prior to the reorganisation of Niger (1999 to 2005) these Regions were known as Departments.

The seven Regions of Niger are further subdivided into 63 Departments. Prior to the reorganisation of Niger (1999 to 2005) these Departments were called Arrondissements.

These changes may cause issues with older locality labels of Niger so care needs to be taken in determining the correct hierarchy.
