100 km east of Johannesburg, south of Bronkhorstspruit and 40 km east from Springs. Originally in Gauteng province but boundary changes now place Argent in Mpumalanga under Delmas municipality. Argent is an area known by its railway junction. Rocks of the area belong to the Bushveld Complex.
Argent was the main area in the country for mining silver, prospecting & mining commenced in 1889 until 1956. Collectively the
4 Argent mines produced 272,000 tons of ore, 24,967 tons of lead, 72,429 kg of silver, 254 tons of copper, 3,081 tons of zinc and 20 kg of gold.
Due to many changes of ownership and leasing rights some confusion of mine names has crept in. The four major producing silver mines in this area sometimes referred to as 'Argent Mines' are Transvaal mine, Shimwell vein, both of these are on Dwarsfontein farm, see each locality for explanation of mine names, Boschpoort mine is on a farm of the same name as is Brakfontein mine but note this farm is in Gauteng province. Modern day boundary changes now places Argent in Mpumalanga province previous to that it was in Gauteng & prior to that the area was known as Pretoria Far South.
Reference to Dwarsfontein No. 1 shaft is believed to be an erroneous entry and is confused with the No. 1 shaft of the Transvaal mine (Debbie Woolf).
