Named in 1845 by Alexander Löwe in honor of Johann Rudolf Ritter von Gersdorff [March 18, 1781, Bochnia, Galicia, Poland – April 30, 1849, Wien, Austria], mining expert and owner of the nickel mine at Schladming (ca. 1842).
