Mining in St Just Parish dates back over 4000 years, with evidence of Bronze Age and Iron Age mining activities found in the area. However, it was during the 18th and 19th centuries that mining in the area really took off. The parish is particularly known for its production of tin and copper, with the latter being particularly valuable due to its use in the production of brass. The area was home to a number of large mines, including the famous Levant Mine, which was in operation from the 18th century until its closure in 1930.
The mining area is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its significant contribution to the development of mining technology and its impact on the global economy. The geology of the area continues to be of interest to geologists and mining engineers, with ongoing research into the formation of the mineral deposits and the potential for future mining activities.
