Pyroclastic formation of several eruptive centers in the area of Mendig and in the northern part of Laach Lake with tuffs, ash-flows and pumice layers of phonolitic and trachytic composition. Late stage eruption of gray tuffs (âGraue Laacher-See-Tuffeâ) with xenoliths of different origin (fragments of the Devonian basement, quartz veins, mica schist, crystalline schist, metasomatites, subvolcanites, sanidinites, and tephrites).
There are various mineral localities around the lake â pumice quarries, sandpits, and road cuts.
The most significant ones are:
â Pumice quarries south of Thelenberg mountain
â Pumice quarries in the area of Wingertsberg mountain
â Pumice quarries in the area âIn den Dellenâ
â Pumice quarries east of Krufter Ofen mountain
â Fields west of Laach lake, near Glees
