The Shire of Kalgoorlie-Boulder (City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder) is 550 kilometres east of Perth, and covers 95,575 km2. It is slightly larger than Ireland, and slightly smaller than the US State of Ohio. The population of the shire is around 33,000. The western boundary of the shire runs along the edge of the town, heads north-west till just past Ora Banda, then turns east all the way to the South Australian border. The southern boundary is on the northern outskirts of Kambalda and again heads east to the border.

The climate is semi arid in the west to arid in the east. Salmon gum woodland dominates the west, grading to Mallee heading east, before reaching the Great Victoria Desert which covers more than half the eastern portion of the shire.

The town of Kalgoorlie-Boulder arose when gold was discovered in the 1890's. This led to intense mining of the Golden Mile, said by some to be the richest square mile of earth in the world. The town's fortunes have largely ridden with mining, and have waxed and waned over the years. At present the town is booming.

Mining, pastoral and tourism dominate the economy.

Mining and specimen related attractions are many in Kalgoorlie. Of note is the Hannans North Museum, with its collection of historic buildings from the Golden Mile, underground mine tour, gold pourings, prospector museum and high end specimen collection.

The Western Australian Kalgoorlie-Boulder Museum for its display of gold bars, nuggets, and information about the gold rush days.

The Kalgoorlie School of Mines mineral specimen collection. Tours are conducted into the Superpit, and there is a viewing platform. Gold spat can be bought from the company shop in Boulder, but they do not count as mineral specimens.

The western half of the shire sits in the Yilgarn Craton, and its gold bearing greenstone belts. Many of the nickel mines are north of Kambalda and fall within the shire, others are in Coolgardie Shire, which is where the town of Kambalda is sited.

Geologically speaking the Eucla and Gunbarrel Basins occupy the eastern half of the shire.

There are hundreds of historic gold mines in the shire. Modern mining is rampant. Apart from the Superpit, gold mining in the shire takes place across vast areas between Kalgoorlie, Broad Arrow, and Ora Banda to the north-west.

Gold mines are also found south and south-west of the town, but are by no means limited to only these locations. There are a number of nickel mines between Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Kambalda, and historically also north of Broad Arrow. Tropicana is a recently opened gold mine on the western fringe of the Great Victoria Desert. Beyond this, there are no mines, for that matter people, water or roads through this region.

Gold specimens are found from Kalgoorlie in private collections but care needs to be taken for provenance. Any specimen found with a metal detector in the Kalgoorlie region, may get labelled with the town's name as the only recognisable place. Most of the material historically mined at the Golden Mile went to the mill, and modern mining is no different.

While there are plenty of specimen locations in neighbouring shires, there is surprisingly little for the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Shire, and the bulk of its landmass is in the Great Victoria Desert, of which little is known about.

Common opal specimens are in local collections from around Ora Banda and Grants Patch (see Coolgardie and Menzies Shires).
