This county represents the Utah corner of the 4-corners point, SE Utah. Founded on February 17, 1880, and named for the San Juan River, it covers 7,933 square miles (20,546 km²), with its county seat at Monticello. Blanding is the most populous city. The total population is over 15,000.

Uranium mining was big here, since the county contains a portion of the Uravan belt on the Colorado Plateau. A wide variety of other commodities were also mined in this county. It is home to the type localities for 53 mineral species so far.
