Until July 2020 this county was named Jelenia Góra County (Polish: powiat jeleniogórski). The change formally took effect on January 1, 2021. The current name references the Karkonosze Mountains.
The mining operations, dating back to the beginning of the XIIth century, started in various parts of the district between Miedzianka and Ciechanowice.
There are four mining fields, the western field close to the Karkonosze granite and the central field (both named collectively as the Miedzianka field), the eastern field in Ciechanowice and the northern field located north of the Bóbr River (“Lead Mountains” - Góry Ołowiane).
The district also covers a small southern fragment of the Kaczawskie Mts.
