The Northern Territory is divided into 17 local government areas, including 11 shires and five municipalities.

The local government areas (LGAs) of the Northern Territory, Australia are the areas for which particular Local Government authorities, generally known as "Councils" have the responsibility to provide local government services. Local Governments in the Northern Territory dates back to the start of the twentieth century.

As of 1 January 2014, there are three classifications of local government in the Northern Territory:
- Municipalities (predominantly inner-city suburban areas and smaller rural towns)
- Shires (outer suburban areas)
- Regions

From 1 January 2014, 8 of the Shires were reclassified as Regions (Barkly, Central Desert, East Arnhem, MacDonnell, Roper Gulf, Tiwi Islands, Victoria Daly and West Arnhem. Accordingly the term region, in the Northern Territory, should only refer to one of these.

Furthermore, there are five unincorporated areas that do not belong on any local government area, being Aboriginal land councils which are areas of Aboriginal self-governance.
